UI/UX: The Figma Revolution
Why Figma Wins:
Figma has taken over the design world because it is browser-based (runs on any decent laptop), collaborative (multiplayer editing), and has a generous free tier.
Getting Started:
You don't need to pay a dime to learn. Create a free account and start cloning popular apps like Spotify or Instagram to understand layout and spacing.
Community:
The "Figma Community" tab offers thousands of free templates, icons, and UI kits. You never have to start from scratch.
Graphics: Canva vs. Photoshop
Canva (The Democratizer):
Perfect for social media managers and small business owners.
- Pros: Easy to use, localized Nigerian templates, affordable Pro version in Naira.
- Cons: Limited for advanced photo manipulation or vector work.
Adobe Photoshop / Illustrator (The Pro Standard):
Essential for brand identity designers and high-end retouching.
- The Cost Issue: Adobe Creative Cloud is expensive and billed in Dollars. Many Nigerian designers use alternatives like Affinity Designer (one-time payment) or free tools like GIMP and Inkscape.
Video: CapCut & Premiere Pro
CapCut (Mobile & Desktop):
The king of TikTok and Reels. It is surprisingly powerful, free, and easy to learn. If you are a content creator, master this first.
Premiere Pro / DaVinci Resolve:
For long-form content (YouTube documentaries, films).
- Tip: DaVinci Resolve has a free version that is Hollywood-grade. It is a great alternative to paid Adobe software.
Hardware: Mac vs. PC
The MacBook Myth:
You do NOT need a MacBook to be a great designer. However, color accuracy matters.
Specs to look for:
- RAM: Minimum 16GB. Design tools eat RAM for breakfast.
- Screen: IPS panel with good color accuracy (sRGB 100%).
- Processor: Core i7 or Ryzen 7 (newer generations).
If you can afford a MacBook Air (M1/M2), it is the best value for money due to battery life and screen quality.
