Perimeter Defense: First Line

Security starts at the gate. In Nigeria, we rely heavily on physical barriers, but are they effective?

Lighting is Key:
Criminals hate light. Install motion-sensor solar lights around your perimeter. If NEPA takes light, your security shouldn't go dark.

"Burglary Proof" vs. Fire Trap:
We love our iron bars (burglary proofs), but they can be deadly during a fire. Ensure at least one window in each room has a key-operated release mechanism from the inside. Keep the key nearby but out of reach from the window.

Cooking Gas: The Silent Danger

Gas explosions are becoming too common. Most are preventable.

Check the Expiry Date:
Yes, cylinders expire! Look for a code on the metal strip (e.g., D26 means expires Dec 2026). If your cylinder is expired, stop using it immediately.

The Soap Test:
Never use a match to check for leaks. Mix soap and water, then sponge it on the hose and regulator. If it bubbles, you have a leak. Turn off the valve and open windows.

Fire Prevention & Electricals

Electrical faults cause 60% of house fires in Lagos.

Avoid "By-Pass":
By-passing your meter or using substandard wires to "manage" is a recipe for disaster. When wires overheat, they melt and catch fire inside the walls.

Get a Fire Extinguisher:
Every kitchen needs a Class B (CO2 or Foam) extinguisher. Water makes grease fires worse!

Your Emergency Action Plan

When trouble comes, panic is your enemy. Have a plan.

Important Numbers:
Memorize 112 or 767 (Lagos). Have your local police division's number saved on speed dial.

Neighborhood Watch:
Join your estate WhatsApp group. Your neighbors are your first responders.
